Wood DestructionWhat is a Wood Destroying Insect Inspection?

A Wood destroying insect inspection is carried out by a certified pest control professional to evaluate the presence of Wood destroying insects in a home. Wood-destroying insect inspection reports are always required for VA mortgages, and VA refinances and may be part of conventional refinances, HUD mortgages, or general building inspections. What Sorts of Insects Destroy Wood in Michigan?

The most well-known type of Wood destroying insect is termite. Termites feed on moist or decaying Wood and hence can do a lot of damage to homes once they have become infested. Termites, however, are not native to Michigan and are typically not found here except in the southernmost counties bordering Indiana. Carpenter ants are the most common Wood destroying insect in Michigan. Carpenter ants dig their tunnels out of moist Wood. Powder post beetles and carpenter bees are common Wood destroying insects in Michigan.

What Wood Destroying Inspection Consists Of?

Plan on a Wood destroying insect inspection taking a minimum of one hour. During that time, Prudential Pest Management will thoroughly evaluate the structure, looking for signs of Wood destroying insect activity. Of course, this may be live insects, but it also includes dead insects, tedious activity, exit holes, frass (powdery excreta of insects), sawdust, or shelter tubes. The technician will note what evidence of insect activity they see. Visible damage due to Wood destroying insects will also be documented. This will also be indicated if there is no evidence of Wood destroying insects.

Besides the main level of your home, the technician may need access to basements, crawlspaces, attics, garages, exteriors, porches, and any additions. If a technician cannot access one or all of these areas, he will note this on his report.

The technician may then note some recommendations about how to deal with any problems. His findings and suggestions will be indicated in the Wood Destroying Insect Inspection Report, which you will be given a copy of after the inspection. This is a standardized form used by all companies that provide Wood destroying insect inspections. The Wood destroying insect inspection report form’s technical name is Form NPMA-33, issued by the National Pest Management Association. Any company you hire to do this inspection should be using this form.

Termite Damage

We control termites in your house in two ways.
  • Trenching and drilling into areas to get a long-lasting, effective product to active areas
  • We are using baits and monitors to eliminate termites in the long term.

These methods combine to control existing termites and prevent new satellite colonies from emerging years later.

Powder Post BeetlePowderpost Beetles and Wood Destroying Fungus

Powder-post beetles and fungus can weaken the main support beams in a home, causing a structure to sag or collapse; we treat Powder-post beetles and fungus using a long-term treatment on the Wood that kills the Wood destroying beetles and other organisms and protects the Wood from future attacks.
